Judy Malinowski, 33, died on Tuesday, according to her mother Bonnie Bowes, following the attack in August 2015.
Mrs Bowes said: ‘That child suffered for two years to tell her own story, who has the strength to do it?’
Michael Slager, 41, pleaded no contest to aggravated arson and was jailed for 11 years for his cruel attack on the mum-of-two from Ohio. He could now face murder charges, according to Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien.
He said: ‘It would be our intention, and it has been all along, that should she pass away it was our intention to pursue a homicide charge.
‘This day was not unexpected for probably a long time, but it’s sad that it finally arrived.’
Slager originally maintained he set her on fire by accident while lighting a cigarette.
Ms Malinsowski spent months in hospital recovering and she was planning to testify against her ex, but his plea deal scuppered her opportunity to face him in court.
Determined to have her say, she decided to speak in December about the attack, which she describes as ‘pure evil’.
‘I never knew that a human being could be so evil. He just stood there and did nothing.’
Speaking to other victims of domestic abuse from her hospital bed, Ms Malinsowski said: ‘Get help. Run.’
Malinowski, who previously survived ovarian cancer, lost two of her fingers, her ears and a lot of her hair in the horrific attack, which occurred at a Gahanna gas station, reports ABC.
She’s had to endure 52 surgeries and now talks in a whisper due to damage to her trachea.
During sentencing, Judge Judy Lynch, who jailed Slager, said: ‘There’s nothing to say to a person like you, Mr Slager. You really do seem like one of those people who have no soul.’
